IISU NDLI Club and the NSS units of IIS (Deemed to be University) in association with Department of Library and Information Science and the Centre for Indian Knowledge Systems successfully organized a guest lecture on "Decolonization of Bharat" on 24th March 2025. The event aimed to provide students with a deeper understanding of Bharat’s decolonization process, highlighting its historical and cultural significance and its continuing impact on the nation's identity in contemporary times.

Dr. Shipra Mathur, advisor from the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication, delivered an engaging and thought-provoking lecture that emphasized the importance of reclaiming indigenous knowledge, preserving cultural identity, fostering self-reliance, and taking pride in Bharat’s rich heritage. She eloquently traced Bharat’s journey through the colonial era, discussing key historical events, policies, and movements that played a crucial role in the nation's struggle for decolonization.

The lecture explored various dimensions, including resistance movements led by freedom fighters, the role of literature and media in shaping national consciousness, and the socio-political and economic impact of colonial rule. Dr. Mathur also underscored that decolonization is not merely a historical concept but an ongoing process that requires continuous efforts in education, policymaking, and media representation. She specifically pointed out the significance of using "Bharat" in official contexts.

Additionally, Dr. Mathur emphasized the importance of using one's mother tongue and regional languages with pride, advocating for their promotion in education, literature, and daily communication. She encouraged students to take pride in their state, culture, and national identity, reinforcing the idea that true decolonization involves embracing and celebrating one’s roots rather than seeking external validation.

Students actively participated in discussions, posed insightful questions, and shared their perspectives on how decolonization manifests in modern-day Bharat. Dr. Mathur encouraged critical thinking by drawing parallels between historical events and contemporary challenges, urging students to reflect on their role in preserving and promoting indigenous knowledge systems and cultural heritage.

The event received an overwhelmingly positive response, offering attendees an eye-opening experience that left them with much to ponder about their role in shaping a truly decolonized Bharat.
